Saccharomyces Boulardii
Research dedicated to probiotic supplementation has highlighted a few specific strains that consistently outperform the rest. Saccharomyces Boulardii is one such strain, which helps to balance microbial populations in the gut. As a beneficial yeast, S. Boulardii is resistant to antibiotics, stomach acid, and temperature change, making it an excellent choice to support the health of your bowels when traveling or using antibiotics. Due to its antifungal properties, it has been suggested that S. Boulardii can both reduce the risk of Candida yeasts translocating to the digestive tract and inhibit the growth of existing Candida in the intestines. In addition, this strain benefits the integrity of both the intestine and the immune system via several different biological mechanisms.
- Supports normal bowel motility
- Supports the production of secretory IgA in the gut
- May reduce the potential for Candida infestation and inflammation
- Ideal for use during travel or antibiotic use
What is Saccharomyces Boulardii?
Saccharomyces boulardii is a strain of beneficial (probiotic) yeast, which helps to balance microbial populations in the gut. It was first isolated by the French microbiologist Henry Boulard in 1923 after observing natives in Indochina who ingested S. boulardii by way of litchi and mangosteen skins as a remedy for a range of digestive disorders, even cholera. Since then, more modern science has supported the health benefits of taking this yeast strain as a probiotic supplement.
Being a yeast, as opposed to a bacterial strain, S. boulardii is resistant to antibiotics, stomach acid, and temperature change (it does not require refrigeration), making it an excellent choice to support the health of your bowels when traveling or using antibiotics. S. boulardii has even been shown to improve the gut populations of those suffering from Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, a bacteria known to cause stomach ulcers.
How Does Saccharomyces Boulardii Work?
Metabolic Maintenance provides Saccharomyces Boulardii in a potent single capsule dose. Each capsule provides 10 billion CFU, a commonly studied dose to provide benefits in a number of clinical settings.
Unlike bacterial probiotics, S. boulardii is protected by a cell wall made of chitin which is resistant to stomach acid. This means a great proportion of a supplementary dose is likely to survive digestion and travel, intact, to the intestinal tract where its benefits may take effect.
The main mechanism of action of S. boulardii is most probably its ability to prevent pathogenic infection by interfering with the colonization of the intestinal mucosa by other microbial species. It also helps to rebuild microbial balance and homeostasis after dysbiosis, participates in the modulation of local and systemic immune responses, supports the stability of the gastrointestinal barrier function, and helps to induce enzymatic activities related to absorption and nutrition. These effects are evident in its support of normal bowel transit time, mitigating occasional diarrhea. It also increases short-chain fatty acids, which support healthy intestinal mucosal cells and aid in intestinal immunity by boosting the secretion of IgA and supporting a normal inflammatory response.
What are the Suggested Uses for Saccharomyces Boulardii?
- Help rebuild and rebalance a dysbiotic gut
- Support normal bowel movements after (or even during) a course of antibiotic treatment
- Protect a healthy gut from pathogenic infection by Candida or other dysbiotic microbial species
- Excellent for travel: shelf-stable (no refrigeration necessary), boosts the immune system against foreign pathogens from new foods and new environments
