Melatonin
180 CAPS | 2 MG
Melatonin, a hormone we all produce naturally, is intimately involved in synchronizing the body's hormone secretions, setting the brain's internal clock and generating circadian rhythms. Preliminary findings suggest it may help support normal nerve function and healthy blood pressure.
- Promotes restorative sleep
- Supports healthy blood pressure
- Aids in protecting nerve health
What is Melatonin?
The naturally occurring pineal hormone, melatonin, is involved in the circadian regulation and facilitation of sleep, the inhibition of cellular mutation, and the enhancement of immune function.
How does Melatonin Work?
Melatonin is a hormone that is mainly produced by the pineal gland during hours of darkness to help regulate the "body clock” that controls when you're awake and when your body is ready for sleep. This clock typically follows a 24-hour cycle called the circadian rhythm. The rhythm affects how every cell, tissue, and organ works. Although melatonin is known as a neurohormone, which we typically associate with the brain, it has been found in all kingdoms of life, including both vertebrate and invertebrate animals, bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants. And, in all kingdoms melatonin production requires an intake of the aromatic amino acid L-tryptophan, and is synthesized from serotonin. Supplementing with melatonin alone will not change circulating levels of serotonin, or affect mood, but low levels of serotonin could be a cause for poor melatonin production and consequential difficulty sleeping. This is one probable link between sleep disorders and depression, drug addiction, and other serotonin-related pathologies.
Naturally, sufficient levels of circulating melatonin should spike at night to help us fall and stay asleep, but as we age, we tend to produce less and less melatonin. This may be the reason new sleep difficulties often arise as we advance into our later years. It is also the reason that melatonin supplements should be taken in the evenings so that the highest levels of circulating melatonin occur when you are ready to bring on sleep, mimicking the young, healthy body’s natural cycles.
Outside of the pineal gland, gastrointestinal tissue contains the highest concentrations of naturally occurring melatonin. There, melatonin has been demonstrated to prevent ulcerations of gastrointestinal mucosa by an antioxidant action, reduce the secretion of hydrochloric acid, stimulate the immune system, foster epithelial regeneration, and increase microcirculation.
Several studies have shown that melatonin reduces chronic and acute inflammation, and as a consequence, melatonin improves the clinical course of illnesses which have an inflammatory etiology. Melatonin also has immunomodulatory activity, regulating cytokine production of immunocompetent cells, reducing adhesion molecules and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and modifying serum inflammatory parameters.
Melatonin is also both a direct and indirect antioxidant, scavenging free radicals, stimulating antioxidant enzymes, enhancing the activities of other antioxidants or protecting other antioxidant enzymes from oxidative damage.
What is the Suggested Use for Melatonin?
- Promotes restorative sleep. When taken in the evenings, a small dose of melatonin can boost the natural release of this hormone, encouraging the onset of sleep and helping to regulate the circadian rhythm.
- Supports healthy blood pressure. As the circadian clock is involved in autonomic cardiovascular regulation, nighttime melatonin intake has also been shown to help regulate blood pressure.
- Aids in immunity and tissue health. As an immunomodulator, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant, melatonin exerts a variety of protective effects on your cells and tissues.
