L-Lysine is an essential amino acid and must be obtained from food or by supplementation. Vegetarians, and athletes who participate in frequent vigorous exercise, are at highest risk for a lysine deficiency. L-Lysine helps the body absorb and conserve calcium and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendons and cartilage. *

What is L-Lysine?
L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning it must come from the diet as it cannot be made within the body. As a building block for protein, amino acids like L-lysine are necessary for normal growth and development. In particular, L-lysine is needed by the body to manufacture carnitine, a substance that is used in the conversion of fatty acids into energy.
Vegetarians are at risk of becoming lysine deficient as animal protein is typically our primary source of dietary lysine. Athletes who participate in frequent, vigorous exercise may also be at risk as lysine is used more quickly by the body when building new body tissue and repairing damage.
L-Lysine helps the body absorb and conserve calcium and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a structural substance used to build bones, skin, tendons, and cartilage.
How does L-Lysine Work?
Calcium deficiency contributes to age-related bone loss, so most (if not all) preventive approaches to osteoporosis will include an increase in dietary calcium. Adding L-lysine to your diet can further increase calcium absorption. L-lysine can both enhance intestinal calcium absorption and improve the conservation of the absorbed calcium by the kidneys, suggesting that lysine may be helpful in the maintenance of calcium levels for bone health.
For decades, it has been well-understood that L-lysine inhibits normal replication of the herpes simplex virus, and oral supplementation with this essential amino acid can shorten the course and duration of the disease. Other studies have also suggested an application for L-lysine supplementation in mood balance and anxiety control.
What are the Suggested Uses for L-Lysine?
- Supports a healthy calcium status by aiding in both intestinal absorption and renal retention of calcium.
- Nourishes healthy collagen formation to support connective tissues, cartilage, and bone.
- Promotes production of proteins such as antibodies, hormones, new tissue, and enzymes.
