The Science
The gastrointestinal (GI) lining of the digestive tract is made up of a layer of cells called the epithelium. This protective layer is responsible for allowing nutrients to be absorbed into the body as well as protecting against harmful toxins entering. This epithelium lining can be compromised by stress, overconsumption of alcohol, food intolerance, microbial imbalance, and poor nutrition commonly known as intestinal permeability. This affects the integrity of the protective barrier and can allow unwanted toxins, microbes or food particles to pass directly into the body leading to discomfort. L-glutamine is a primary source of fuel for cells of the small intestine and essential for tissue repair throughout the body, including a 4g dose in each serving that promotes the normal regeneration and protection of this cell barrier health and integrity.
Healthy Gut Support includes deglycyrrhized licorice root extract (DGL) and 75 mg of aloe vera extract, promoting and protecting the health of the gut mucosa. DGL is a form of licorice root that has been specially processed to contain only biologically active flavonoids, without glycyrrhizin. This allows for a higher dose of the active ingredient, which helps maintain a healthy mucosal surface. Traditionally used to support GI-related complaints, DGL has been shown to promote bacterial balance, protect the intestinal lining, and promote normal levels of inflammation. Inflammatory signals released when the body is exposed to unwanted toxins and proteins can trigger cortisol to increase the breakdown and increased utilization of L-glutamine in the small intestines. Under stress, L-glutamine has been shown to become a conditionally essential amino acid for the normal regeneration and protection of a healthy mucosal barrier.
