Curcumin + C
Overview
Curcumin, the active compound extracted from turmeric root, is touted for its ability to mediate the body's natural response to physical, chemical, and emotional stressors. In particular, if normal oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways get out of balance a whole host of health issues may result. Curcumin may support health in a wide variety of tissues in the body as it supports normal inflammatory balance and tissue protection via its antioxidant properties. Joint and cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and normal blood sugar maintenance are areas with expanding research regarding the potential of curcumin to benefit health. Longvida® makes use of a patented technology that permits maximal absorption of free-form curcumin into the bloodstream and target tissues without the use of added ingredients like piperine. This increased bioavailability allows Longvida® to support wellbeing in several areas of health.

What is Curcumin + C?
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is touted for its ability to mediate and buffer the body’s natural responses to physical, chemical, and emotional stressors, thereby promoting a sense of alert calmness while delivering antioxidant protection of the brain and body.
However, somewhere between 40-85% of an oral dose of natural curcumin, on average, passes through the gastrointestinal system unchanged, as it is insoluble, and most of what is absorbed breaks down rapidly in the small intestine and liver. Recently, however, UCLA neuroscientists made a major breakthrough in curcumin supplementation technology, resulting in the release of Longvida® Optimized Curcumin. Not only does Longvida® make use of a patented technology that permits maximal absorption of free curcumin into the bloodstream (65x 95% curcumin extract) and target tissues, it can also cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing this powerful antioxidant access to the brain for the relief of oxidative stress. Longvida® has been the subject of over 10 clinical trials showing its efficacy. Longvida is the active curcumin ingredient now contained in Metabolic Maintenance’s Curcumin + C supplement.
Our formula combines it with the powerful antioxidant vitamin C. Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body. It protects indispensable molecules, such as proteins, lipids, RNA and DNA, from damage by the free radicals and reactive oxygen species generated by normal metabolism and age, as well as in response to toxin and pollutant exposure. As an enzyme cofactor, Vitamin C also participates in the synthesis of collagen, carnitine, and catecholamine. Collagen synthesis is necessary for maintaining healthy joint function, which can become especially important as we age.
How does Curcumin + C Work?
Longvida curcumin employs Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle Technology™ (SLCP™), a coating that surrounds free curcumin particles in a lipophilic (fat-soluble) layer that protects it from the acidic conditions of the stomach. The coating begins to dissolve in the gastrointestinal tract so that curcumin can be absorbed by the small intestine, and then delivered by the bloodstream to its target tissues.
Once circulating the body, antioxidants, such as curcumin and vitamin C can work within cells to protect against, or even reverse, some of the damage free radicals cause. The combination of curcumin and vitamin C has more powerful antioxidant and antifungal properties than either supplement alone and may be effective against Candida overgrowth. Essentially, curcumin and vitamin C are complementary antioxidants for both brain and body health.
Curcumin also has very strong anti-inflammatory properties. Oral administration of curcumin has been demonstrated to reduce acute inflammation with an effect that is comparable to cortisone and phenylbutazone and exhibited about half the effect of those synthetic drugs in patients with chronic inflammation. This action is thought to take place by lowering the body’s release of histamines and increasing natural cortisone production by the adrenal glands. Curcumin may also help to prevent inflammation, as it is known to inhibit the biosynthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins from arachidonic acid and reduce neutrophil function during inflammatory states.
Due to its antioxidant properties and its ability to lower pro-inflammatory cytokines, curcumin has also been labeled “hepatoprotective”, or helpful to liver function. It appears to aid in the production of bile for digestion which suggests it would be an excellent supplement for individuals prone to gallstones and has shown great success in relieving patients with gastric ulcers.
Curcumin has also been found to alleviate some behavioral symptoms and biochemical changes caused by chronic fatigue, one of the core symptoms of depression. Depression has been linked to reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and a decrease in the size of the hippocampus, an area of the brain tied to learning and memory. Curcumin boosts BDNF levels and potentially reverses some of these changes.
There is also evidence to show that curcumin supplementation can increase the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is typically linked to feelings of pleasure and emotion, although it also regulates locomotion. Serotonin, also commonly thought of as a neurotransmitter of pleasure, is involved in neurovegetative functions of the body such as appetite, sleep, memory and learning, temperature regulation, mood, behavior (including sexual and hallucinogenic behavior), cardiovascular functions, muscle contraction, and endocrine regulation.
What is the Suggested Use for Curcumin + C?
- Supports healthy brain function by boosting brain-derived neurotrophic factor and protecting the hippocampus.
- Improves cognition, mood, and alertness by promoting neurotransmitter production.
- Eases joint pain and the natural inflammatory response, thereby supporting healthy joint motility and function.
- Supports healthy liver, colon, musculoskeletal, and cellular function.
