Overview
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)
5-HTP plays a role in both sleep regulation and mood balance. 5-HTP is a precursor for serotonin, which can then be converted to melatonin (the hormone that helps us fall and stay asleep). However, 5-HTP bypasses the light-triggering system that regulates the release of melatonin, increasing both serotonin and melatonin release, regardless of light or time of day. Serotonin has a calming effect on brain chemistry, and may help to ease anxiety. Serotonin also plays an important role in many other bodily functions, including digestion, appetite, and pain perception. Our 5-HTP is naturally derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia and is combined with activated vitamin B-6 as active P-5-P, an important cofactor in serotonin metabolism. Consult with your physician if using SSRI’s. *

Description: 5-HTP is a metabolite of L-tryptophan and a precursor of serotonin and melatonin. Our 5-HTP is naturally derived from the seeds of the African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia, and is combined with activated vitamin B-6 (P5P), an important cofactor in serotonin metabolism.
How does 5-HTP Work?: There is a complicated and complex relationship between mood and sleep, and 5-HTP plays a role in both. Naturally produced by the body as a precursor for the production of serotonin, 5-HTP is therefore indirectly converted into melatonin. However, 5-HTP bypasses the light-triggering system that regulates the release of melatonin, and provides the substrate for an increase in both serotonin and melatonin release, regardless of light or time of day.
Because 5-HTP increases serotonin, it has a calming, relaxing effect on brain chemistry, and may help to ease any anxiety that occasionally arises at bedtime. Studies have shown that 5-HTP supplementation can help patients fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply than a placebo. Serotonin also plays an important role in many other bodily functions, including digestion, appetite, and pain perception. Again, healthy serotonin levels are essential for maintaining healthy melatonin levels, and both serotonin and melatonin are critical to sleep and a functional biological clock. 5-HTP supports the production and release of both of these natural neurochemicals.
Studies have indicated that 5-HTP provides support for normal moods and emotional well-being. Supplemental 5-HTP may also help to moderate appetite and food cravings, and weight-loss studies recorded significant results compared to placebo. Serotonin is also found in high concentrations in the gut where it regulates gastrointestinal motility. 5-HTP may, therefore, boost serotonin levels to aid in gut motility when low serotonin takes a toll on the regularity of your bowels.
Our 5-HTP formula also includes glycine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, which also has a calming effect on the body. Vitamin B-6 has been included too, as it is essential for reactions involving the metabolism of amino acids, including the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin.
What are the Suggested Uses for 5-HTP?
- Serotonin support - 5-HTP provides important precursors of serotonin and melatonin, thereby supporting balanced mood, restful sleep, and a healthy, functional gut.
- Appetite regulation - 5-HTP has been shown to normalize appetite both for those interested in eating less and those who need to increase their food intake.
