How to Determine How Many Physician's Elemental Diet Bags are Needed
Steps:
-
Step 1: Find your desired calories per day: Calorie Calculator. Consider that you will be exercising less during the program, light-moderate activity is generally recommended while your body is going through a program.
Step 2: Decide the number of days of your protocol (Reset= 1-5 days, Therapeutic: 14+ days).
Step 3: Calculate the total calories needed. Total Days X Daily Calories = Total Calories Needed. Write this number down.
Step 4: Decide with your health professional an appropriate tapering schedule and food reintroduction, General example for a 14+ day protocol, with 1-6 days of tapering.
Example tapering:
Days 15-17: 50% daily calories from elemental diet / 50% from food reintroduction
Days 18-20: 25% from elemental diet / 75% from food reintroduction
Days 21+: 100% from normal food
Add up total calories needed for your tapering schedule.
Step 5: Add your treatment and tapering calories together from steps 3 and 4.
Step 6: Divide your total calories from step 5 by 5400. This is the number of dextrose-free elemental diet bags you need to complete your program. Round up.
For someone following a 2700-calorie/day diet, 1 bag will last 2 days. Someone following a 14-day protocol will need 7 bags + 1-2 bags for any 50%/25% tapering schedule.
Individual needs may range from 2000-3300 calories/day.
